I do like to look of the many fighter cockpits out there but the thought of strapping myself into a seat and putting a flight helmet in my den or lounge room just seems a bit odd. The tube liner community seems to lead the way but personally I find sitting in a cockpit sim for hours in a jet liner unappealing but that’s just me.

There are many firms out there supplying full cockpits and so so many out there creating very accurately built copies of real aircraft. It was a thrust Master setup but that was long back and not the quality of the current setups. I had an old HOTAS system many years ago and wore it out. The Warthog HOTAS is one option that is good enough for the US Air Force to use in there multi million dollar simulators so it going to be good enough for us home simmers. The modern yoke and joystick options make flying in X Plane 11 a more full filling experience with some expensive but realistic items on the dream list.

Waited 30 years since the concept was first tried so a couple more will be ok till they get it spot on. The next Generation of headsets should make it so much better. I have yet to try these but the experience sounds amazing from those who use it but there are still limitations and the screen quality needs also to improve along with the field of view but it sounds like a fun experience all the same at the moment. Stepping into newer technology there is obviously VR headsets. I use the facetracknoir during the day but it isn’t as effective in a darker room. If you have a good webcam you can use FacetrackNOIR which uses the camera to track your face in 3D space and does the same job. There are many tools out there that make the flight experience more realistic and gives you a real feeling drawn into the X Plane Simulator.įree track is one inexpensive version which required LED lights attached normally to a hat on your head which gives you full 6 DOF as you look around the cockpit. I honestly feel both challenged and excited every time I jump into my virtual 3D cockpit. The real time flight model reacting to every little input where the others always felt like they were on rails.

I call it a flight simulator and not a game for a good reason, it has given me the tools to practice my limited flying experience In a way the others could not hope to do. When I first discovered X Plane 11 about 12 months at the end of 2017 I was shocked and surprised by many aspects of this flight Simulator. My experience has had me fly Diamond DA20, Jabiru J160/170 and the powerful 230 as well as a few minutes flying a jet trainer in the RAAF and a ride in the Mirage IIIO that took me beyond the sound barrier and crushing G forces in aerobatics. Come and join me in the cockpit for stalls, spins and circuits to see how they compare to real Aircraft I have flown.

I would love to take you on a series of pilot point of view flight in both FREE and Payware Aircraft that are available for you to fly in X Plane and tell you how real they feel to me. When I realized the wind effects making the aircraft crab in the crosswinds I knew I had found my new simulator. It has such a realistic f eeling of movement and not being on rails. I liked the others because I hadn’t flown X Plane, one flight with it and I was hooked. In discovering X Plane 11 I felt I had finally found a simulator that was realistic. I was patient and now I can fly when I want. The thing I missed was being able to fly myself but sometimes dreams take time.

The passion for aircraft and aviation led me to join the RAAF where I enjoyed years working on the most amazing aircraft. It certainly fulfilled a dream I have always had from a kid. I am so fortunate to have experience real world fly having got my Sport Pilot Certificate in Australia some years back.
